If you have a website, it’s important to understand the concept of niche.
A niche is a sub-category of the overall topic that your site covers. For example, if your site sells camping equipment, you might have a separate section for hiking gear that’s completely different from your camping supplies section. That would be an example of two niches within one website: camping and hiking equipment.
What is a niche?
A niche is a specific group of people who share a common interest. It could be something as broad as the “small business owner” or something more specific like “people who are looking for an online course to teach them how to grow their Instagram following”. You can even have multiple niches, such as both “the small business owner” and “the freelance graphic designer who wants to grow their business by creating courses for their audience”.
To help you get started thinking about your audience in this way, here are some examples of different niches:
- A group of people with a shared problem
- A group of people with a shared interest
- An industry (eg marketing)
How to choose a niche
When choosing a niche, your first step is to find something that you’re genuinely interested in. This will help ensure that you stay motivated and committed to the project for a long time. It also helps if you’re knowledgeable about the topic—that way, if someone asks you questions about it, you won’t have to look up the answers on Wikipedia or Google.
Now that we’ve got our inspiration and knowledge bases covered, let’s think about how we can make this topic easy for people who are new to it (and by extension search engines). We’ll want:

- An example of what our service looks like when delivered
Niche selection example: celebrity gossip
Let’s say you’re passionate about celebrity gossip. You would love to be able to share your thoughts on the hottest new stars, their relationships and breakups, as well as their latest style news. But you’re not sure what niche to choose from this list:

- Fashion Inspiration
- Travel Tips & Tricks
- Food & Beverage Trends
What is the Perfect Niche? (hint, it doesn’t exist)
It’s time for a reality check: the perfect niche doesn’t exist. There is no one-size-fits-all solution that will make you the next Facebook or Twitter, and there probably never will be.
If you think about it, this makes sense. After all, every person has different interests and tastes—two people can be born into the same family yet grow up with completely different preferences based on their life experiences. Why would it be any different for you and your business?
The good news is that this means you have complete control over what kind of business model works best for your audience! It’s all up to you how big of an impact your content can make in the world around us if we choose something we’re passionate about (and then work our asses off).
There is no perfect niche, and if you think you’ve found one, it’s time to start looking again.
